NaNo Day #26: Lowering the Goal Pt. 2

As I said in my last post, I was a little hung up yesterday, and couldn't talk. Or write... which means I am more behind than ever! Not to mention I have Thanksgiving plans Wednesday-Friday, so that means I won't get to write until Saturday. So my new goal, is 30000 words... I know this sucks, but I just have to! I will be writing extra posts to make up with this, and publish them to day, or early tomorrow!

NaNo Day #23: Lowering the Goal

I have to lower my goal. I've been working hard, but I'll be missing two days for Thanksgiving vacation. Not to mention the other two days I have testing. I am lowering my goal to 40000 to 35000. I'm sorry for those hoping I would succeed, but I won't. I guess it wasn't meant to be.

On a happier note, I am over double my wordcount from last year! So yeah! Thank you!

NaNo Day #15: 100%

Yeah, I know today is the sixteenth. So you'll just get two posts today! Sorry, though. but I have good news! Yesterday, I reached 100%! Now, this was my written goal, not my mental goal, but that is still a big accomplishment! 20000 words in fifteen days? That's incredible! Now, I'm not trying to brag, I mean, real NaNoers are higher than that! But it just feels good to reach a goal. But if you have won already: Keep Writing! It is important, because NaNoWriMo only come once a year, and you only get this community too. Once NaNo ends, it's hard to make time to write! So keep going, and get 150%, or 200%, or 3000%!

NaNo Day #14: It Feels Like a Friday

It does! I feel like I have all the time in the world to write! I can do whatever I want! I'm free! But it's still Thursday, which means I have homework to do. I hate when people get in the middle of my writing. And it always happens when I'm in the middle of the most fun scene! So what do you do?

• Let them know it's your writing time. it's important to you, which means you won't eat until you're done.
• Promise to do what they want you to do later. Everyone needs an off day from writing! Do your chores then.
• And most importantly,  make sure they realize this means something to you, even if it doesn't to them.

NaNo Day #11: NaNoFriends and NaNoCompetitiors

I have 4 people I know well doing NaNoWriMo. They are all a bit different. I have one friend who is writing and is about at where I am. Se nice, but she is doing it for fun, not for publishing. Then I have my close friend who is at one word. And I have my friend who is a NaNoRebel and is actually at 2000 words, but says she is at 22000. These are my NaNoFriends. I have fun with them, and we do a lot of the challenges together.

Now, I have another friend who is more of a NaNoCompetitor. When I told her my goal was 40000, she quickly replied her's was 50000. When I say my wordcount she tries to top it. I don't know whether she knows this, but we are in NaNoBattle. A war between Wrimos.

But, whether a NaNoFriend or NaNoCompetitor, they really help to encourage my to get a higher wordcount. I suggest you get Writing Buddies (or NaNoFriends/Competitors) as well!

NaNo Day #10: Loading...

Writing a novel is a bit like playing a game. You've got the different levels (Published, Aspiring), the Power (Caffeinated, Decaf, No Coffee or Candy), and you've got the Novel Progress. Right now on my recorded goal, I am 63% done. However, on my mental goal, I am only 31% done. That means that if I am going to get to where I want to be to accomplish my mental goal (or win the game) I need to write seriously. So naturally, I work on something that won't help my word count goal.   

But, is getting your word count goal, really winning the game? I read a vary persuasive article today, talking about how NaNoWriMo is bad for writing, which I completely disagree with. National Novel Writing Month let's thousands of writers write in a community and set goals. however the essay did have a point.

You cannot publish your novel on December 1st.

Editing is so important. You don't have a novel if you don't edit. You have an incoherent story that just screams Throw me in the fire! So, consider your novel on December 1st not in the Complete change, but still Loading.

NaNo Day #9: Blogging is Hard!

I agree with the all powerful title writer! This is hard! I'm already behind on my word count goal! (The one in my head, not the official one!) And now I have to write a blog post, that doesn't count toward my word count! That's hard! I don't want to do that! But I have to...

I know this is just complaining, but I am so tired! And I just got a great idea for the sequel! But that means I have to write the first one... first. These are called plot bunnies. Bunnies are nice and cute. plot bunnies are evil and vicious. 

So, to sum this up: Exterminate the plot bunnies!

NaNo Day #8: Drag

Today was a drag. A bad day. I didn't get a high word count, and I was just feeling a bit depressed. I don't know why, but I feel it's having an effect on the story. So I'm deciding to stop for the day, and continue tomorrow. I know this is common in NaNoWriMo, but I didn't expect for it to come so soon. So here are my tips for these.

1. Don't give up. You can never give up on writing! If you love it, giving up will make you regret it for the rest of your life.

2. But do take a break. I am only taking a one day break, but sometimes you need to take a longer one. I love reading and writing, but sometime I need to stop with them. Otherwise they become a chore instead of fun!

3. Enjoy it! There is only one real NaNoWriMo each year, and if you don't use it to your advantage, you won't get to do it again for a year! It's like trick-or-treating when you were a kid. If you don't use it to your advantage, you'll be out of candy in a month!

NaNo Day #7: Sick Day

So I was sick today. That's not good! Well, for my word count, it actually is. I've gotten way more today, than I would have gotten at any other time. I got to stay home, and after a bit of sleeping, I got to just write and catch up on my reading. It was so nice! Which brings me to my original topic for today!

This Saturday is the NaNoMarathon! I am super excited for this, because it gives me a day to just write! I think we all need these days, otherwise we get very bored with our work! So take a day with your novel, and get antiquated with it!

NaNo Day #6: I Am A Liar

I am a liar. Oh, you read the title? Never mind then...

My word count goal is 20000 (That's very low.) but my real goal (like the one in my brain) is 40000. Why did I do this? Because I like winning. And I feel it is easier to win if you have a lower goal. And I like being able to be over 100%. And most of all: When I began NaNoWriMo I didn't think I could do more than 20000.

Storytime!

It was the NaNo of '12 (pronounced O 12 even though it was after you should stop saying o before the year) and I was doing great! 400 words! Woo! (This was day one) But then I gave up. And didn't start again until Day 10! DAY 10! I barely got my goal of 15000 words! How could I trust myself with more than 20000 this year! Well, I guess I finally can.

I'm sure that story was just fascinating... I guess I just wanted to give you my backstory.

NaNo Day #4: Tales of Envy

My friend word count is higher than mine. Hearing that, you know your about to get an earful of word count envy. For those of you who don't know, word count envy is the term used in NaNoWriMo to describe a jealousy of a writing buddy to another a writing buddy over word count. Pretty self explanatory. 

Now, normally I am immune to this awful virus, but this year a friend of mine is too far ahead. While my 5000+ is nothing to scoff at, she is over 20000 words in! That's my goal! If you ask any NaNoVetran about 20000 within the first week, they'll tell you it's impossible! Well it isn't!

Sorry, this was more of a rant than a discussion! Tomorrow, I promise... well... I promise nothing!

NaNo Day #3: My Secret Weapon

I discovered a new way to get more words today! I've found it even more useful then word wars actually! I've gotten 2000 words above my goal as of today, and I owe 1000 of them to this new idea! It's called NaNoWriRolls! The basic idea is that it will say something like: If you have blonde hair write 20 words. And you do so. I think it's really cool! You can find more info here:

If you like the Hunger Games, write 50 words
If you hate the Hunger Games, write 500 words (as punishment)
If you haven't read the Hunger Games, write 150 words and read the book
If you have awesome NaNo powers, write 70 words
If you are above 20%, write 50 words
If you are below 20%, write 200 words

NaNo Day #2: Above the Quota

After yesterday's frantic post, I decide I owe you one of real length. Today I am above my word count goal, so I have the time to do that. It feels so good to be above my word count goal, as well.

So, I had my novel outlined, but I had no planned hook until yesterday. So I started off my story with a bang. That's right. A murder. And now I actually see about an extra 20 pages of plot, following this story line as compared to the one I had planned out. I mean, I'm glad that my word are coming easily, but the entire plot is going in a different direction. Should I be happy? Disappointed?

I guess I'll have to wait and see. I'm going to go work on my novel so I can get a bit higher!

NaNo Day #1

As I start NaNoWriMo, I realize that my characters are already going off on their own, and that my story is lacking plot. I need help! I have barely started and it is already bad! PANIC! PANIC! This is what not to do. But what else am I supposed to do? I don't know? Write! (This was very random! But I need to get my word quota in before the end of the night!)

Prepare to NaNo

Get excited! Two more days until NaNoWriMo! I would like to say that now is the time to finish everything you need to finish before December 1st. Read the rest of Allegiant. Finish your homework. You wont have time to do it now! I will be doing daily NaNo updates but they won't be long! Until then, Good luck!

(Sorry this was short! I just got back from vacation and don't have time to do much stuff!)

How to Outline

I have a secret. I've never written an outline before today. Okay that's a lie. I technically started it yesterday. But I have always been a pantser. (someone who writes without an outline) So creating an outline was hard. Am I supposed to do it by chapters? Should I use three act structure? How much detail should I give? In the end I decided to use three act structure, and wrote about two pages worth of outline. It wasn't crazy, but it gave a good summary for each of my acts, and is now a great road map for the beginning of my story.

Now you can outline in any sort of ways. I tried doing it by chapter, but I got bored, and realized that having too many restriction like how to follow each chapter, just wouldn't work for me. I wanted to be able to choose little details to add, how long each chapter was ect. So I made a summary of each act, and it turned out well. The three parts (entitled Curses, Unnatural, and Remedy) each vary in length from short (Curses) to long (Unnatural) to very long (Remedy). 

You could outline the whole book in one long summary, which may work for you, but for me that is a hassle and would be too hard to read.

But remember, if you are writing a series, you may want to outline the rest of the books. Because you can always change what happens earlier in your book, but one something is published, you can't change what you said earlier in the series.

Characters: And why they are imporant

If you are like me, then you have trouble writing characters. It's not that I don't know my characters, I do (maybe a little too well), but sometimes I have trouble portraying how intense these characters are onto the page. It just doesn't come out right. It sound like I'm adding bits of unnecessary information, or obvious foreshadowing, and my characters fall flat on their face. I am a plot-driven author, which I have come to realize, because I think my plots are what make people like my writing. But characters get in my way of writing that intricate plot.

Because maybe what I want to happen, doesn't happen, because that isn't what my character would do. Maybe my character would sit around for seven chapters thinking about what to do, and that would be a very boring seven chapters indeed. So when I start thinking about my new novel (Temporary Title:) The Grimm Society I have to think about what my characters would do during outlining, so this problem wouldn't hit me later.

So here were my ideas.

Add a subplot... or five. If you need too spice up your character without changing too much of the story, add a subplot. Creating romantic twists, or a mini quest can easily make the lives of your characters more interesting without changing the route of the story. I just added two involving the two things that never fail in writing. Love and Death.

A day away with your character. Spend your time getting to know your character. Discover new things about them. Write from a day of their life before the story begins. Discover new things about them like their MBTI type, their favorite music, or even the origin story of why they prefer whole wheat bread to regular. Just spend that day getting to know them. Sure afterwards you'll feel like you know WAY too much, but eventually you will be happy you did it.

Add an interesting phobia or quirk. Will Herondale doesn't like ducks. I will never forget that even thought I read the book (Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare) that it is mentioned in long ago. So A great way to add more to your character (and make them more believable too) is to give them a weird habit or interesting fact. You can even take it from yourself. I bite my lip when I'm nervous, excited, scared, extremely happy, thinking hard, bored, or writing. My main character bites her lip too. It is something I can relate too, and something interesting.

Hi welcome to NaNoBlogMo! This will not be specifically for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) but will focus on it heavily. It will mainly be about me taking writing challenges and my struggle to complete them. This includes NaNoWriMo, A Round of Words in 80 Days, WriYe, and many others. A little bit about myself: I am a teen writer and my dream is to be published. I love all things books, and can go on all day. if I can't be a writer I would like to be a librarian, English teacher, or something in the publishing industry. I have one dog, one sister, and multiple personalities. I may have minor ADHD and have some case of Synesthesia, which means confusion of the senses. Like musical notes all have tastes and colors, and yeah!
